Abstract

TIFLIS IN RUSSIAN POETRY IN MID XIX- BEGIN XX CENTURY
Georgia is a special theme in Russian literature; in different periods it has been uniquely conveyed, but never exhausted. The history of Georgia, its historical bonds with Russian people and culture, are mirrored in the works of myriad of Russian poets. The great interest towards the Caucasus, and Georgia in particular, that bore so many fruits in the 19th century was maintained and increased at the beginning of the 20th century. Poets dedicated their hymns to Tiflis, the capital of the Caucasus, to Kura, Darial and the Greater Caucasus, as well as to the Georgian historical characters and legendary heroes (Tamar, Rustaveli, Sayat-Nova). Moreover, Georgian culture and lifestyle are pictured in Russian poetry (a cup of Kakhetian wine, Kabardi digger, dukhans, “hot carpets”, sazandarey, lezginka). The Georgian capital is depicted in all its beauty: the scenery (snow-covered mountain peaks, snow-white rapids, landslides and gorges); historical monuments (monasteries, ruins of palaces); traditional cuisine (silaf, shashlik, wine); customs of the “the most ancient nation in the world”. Thus, Russian poets, inspired by the spirit of the Georgian capital, were able to recreate the colours of the Orient. Their poems are filled with the beauty of this gorgeous country, its nature and culture, and its melodious sounds.
