Abstract

AN ASSESSMENT OF MÂNİS PUBLISHED IN TAŞPINAR JOURNAL IN THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE REPUBLIC FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF FOLKLORE AND IDEOLOGY
This study scrutinizes how ideology forms the folklore by referring to the role of People’s Houses in the cultural nationalism movements in Turkey. Interaction between folklore and ideology is dated back to the developments in the 19th century in Europe. The characteristics of this interaction changed in the 20th century, and folklore converted to a tool for realpolitik purposes. In Turkey, folklore was used as an instrument to shape the national identity as it is used in Europe. Endeavors originating at the end of the 19th century to create Turkish identity gained impulse with the proclamation of the republic. A nation-state was established with the Republic in which People’s Houses performed various projects to build a national identity. The government decided to introduce People’s Houses to handle related plans under the supervision of the state in 1932. The People’s Houses began their activities with the help of their branches, and later People’s Associations across Turkey. Their primary purpose was to expand social and cultural values brought by the republic to even the small villages. People’s Houses further published journals whose editorial policies are compatible with the ideological perception of the period. People’s House inaugurated in Afyon in 1932 also published a journal named “Taşpınar.” The journal holds specific meaning as it reflects the prevailing ideology of the period. The study aims to scrutinize 15 Turkish mâni composed for the Republic’s 10th anniversary from the perspective of folklore-ideology axis. These folklore products are illustrations of how folklore is instrumentalized to create a new national identity. Ideological discourse in these folklore products is assessed from the viewpoint of the ideological perception of the period. The study also examines the status of these kinds of products constructed in the context of nationalism as an identity ideology among other folklore products.
