Abstract

UNİVERSİTY ACTİONS İN THE PROCESS OF MARCH 12,1971 MİLİTARY NOTE
The note which was given to Süleyman Demirel government by the Turkish military in 1971 caused the biggest break with regards to the history of Turkish Universities. Before the March 12 period, increasing political polarizations from 1965 reached a peak after university boycotts and invasions. After that period, students felt that they had the power to change the system and they formed some ideological organizations. Those organizations led up to some chaotic environment and brought pressure on the governmental system with armed actions. During that period dissident students leagued together under some associations and foundations to clash. Fights with stones and rods among dissident students changed into armed actions. Security forces and the government could not take enough precautions for the actions that happened nearly every day and appeared in the newspapers. From time to time, the government and security forces were a party and that caused political violence among all parts. Because of the 12 March note given by the military, there was a huge pressure on universities, all the student associations were banned. The students who involved in the actions or still active were sent to prison, thus they were pacified.
