Abstract

A VIEV CONCERNING THE BEGGARY OHENOMENON IN ISTANBUL FROM CRIMEAN WAR TO THE WORLD WAR (1853-1914)
Ottomans had been defeated by some long and costly wars, after the Empire lost his socio-economic dominance and Western Europe gained it.The Empire constantly resort to external debts in the process of the Crimean War from 1853 to the proclamation of the World War I in order to supply the damages of wars. In the midst of the nineteenth century, the Empire was made more foreign dependent by the trade pacts with Western countries. In addition to this, unqualified masses that had been migrated from Balkans and Caucasus to Istanbul were meaning an extreme burden for the capital city. When the internal migrates were added up to it for finding a decent job, a large unemployed mass was observed in Istanbul. Most of these people applied to beggary because they could not find a job. In this article, the precipitating factors of beggary in Istanbul between the years 1853-1914 will be examined.
