Abstract

THE OTTOMAN WOMAN IN THE SIGHT OF ENGLISH WOMEN TRAVELLERS, HARVEY AND GARNETT
"Turkish Harems and Circassian Homes", the work penned by Annie Jane Tennant Harvey in 1871, and "Home Life in Turkey" by Lucy Mary Jane Garnett, travel book published in 1909, have great importance to comprehend the Ottoman society. The former of these two English writers has lived in Turkish territories for many years and made unforgettable friends. The travel notes contain Harvey’s first hand sincere impressions in the style of journal and letter. She appeals to the reader’s world of emotion through the literary style. As for Garnett, she has made a professional examination consisting of social and cultural research on the occasion of being a folklorist traveller. Garnett’s travel book written in scientific style includes mostly verifiable folkloric information, and thus its commentary is easier. Women travellers have assumed more realistic and affectionate attitude while telling about these lands which they set foot in more freely than their male colleagues. This awareness reveals that the utilization of women travellers’ discourse is necessary to get true information about the Ottoman and Turkish culture. In order to observe Turkish women through the viewpoint of a foreign eye, the travel notes of two English women travellers who enter the sheltered life of Turkish women and are able to evaluate them objectively as far as travel books allow have been analyzed and paraphrased. The combination of Harvey’s implication (literary) with Garnett’s explication (scientific) procures to obtain more reliable information. The fiction of absolute Orientalist discourse introduced by imagological method that is indispensable element of travel literature is revealed, and so having an accurate description of “Ottoman Women” is aimed at.
