Abstract

A RESEARCH ON DİSTRİBUTİON OF FUNCTİONS AMONG CHARACTERS OF FOLK STORİES: A COMPARİSON BETWEEN KEREM AND ASLİ – FERHAT AND SİRİN
Structural characteristics of narrative types have been one of the largest subjects that have been studied by researchers from past to present. Especially the type and motive studies that have been made within the scope of text-originated folklore theories on narratives have a remarkable place among these researches. Here, one of the preferred approaches is formal analysis. According to this theory, analyses provide manifestation of narrative’s structural system; additionally, formal theory is almost applicable on all narrative types. The aim of this study is to analyze folk stories by means of Propp’s “Distribution of Functions among Characters.” Vladimir Propp, a Russian folklorist, approaches folktales in terms of form within the scope of “Morphology of the Folktale” that is prepared in the direction of Russian folktales. Propp identifies several functions in folktales and classifies these functions. According to this, there are seven spheres of action and seven persons who perform these actions. Within the scope of this study, story of “Ferhat and Sirin” that took the form of a folk story, being switched to folk literature from classic literature through masnavis is compared and contrasted to the story of “Kerem and Asli” which took its form around the life of Kerem, a minstrel, in 17th century. Myths, tales, epics, stories that originate in accordance with oral narrative tradition bear some similarities and differences by means of their structural forms. In this study, these similar and different forms that are observed in types of narration are aimed to be revealed depending on Propp Method. Actions, characters, functions of characters and more points of story arc are set forth through the use of comparison method. When Vladimir Propp’s analysis method is taken as the starting point, it is seen that there are structurally similar spheres of action and characters that perform these actions within the scope of folktales. Related folk stories are analyzed over a visual content that is created in accordance with the method of analysis.
