Abstract

AN EXAMPLE OF PATRIOTISM FROM A SCOUT GIRL: ZOYA KOSMODEMYANSKAYA
Throughout the history, the war constantly gathers people around itself in the direction of the ideology of advocating homeland. It is only possible to stand firm in the war by means of nationalistic feelings and spirit of heroism. In order to create this spirit in individuals, patriotism should be taught at early ages. Thus, the education system in Russia adopts this point of view and stresses the importance of fulfilling a duty for their country at the cost of their lives. The state benefits from this educational system in war times by having patriotic citizens. In Russia, human memory is filled with the examples of heroism of the ones who succeeded it. Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya, the Soviet Union heroine, is an example of patriotism in the national memory. Today, her tragic story is taught in Russia as an example of sacrificing oneself for the sake of homeland. In the current study, Kosmodemyanskaya’s heroism story is examined within the framework of the discourse concerning heroism and patriotism in the light of the literature. This study paves the way for understanding the role of women in war and also indicates the importance of values education in early ages in the defence of homeland.
