Abstract


PLACE OF RELIGION AND FAITH IN STATE AND SOCİETY AS THE SOURCE OF EXISTENCE AND LEGITIMACY: THE OTTOMAN STATE EXAMPL
Administrative and political structures which were established to manage human societies, had to take into account the material and spiritual values of the society they addressed and to produce policies according to them. Beliefs, traditions, social and economic life styles of the society had been the areas which the ruling class regarded, for their own favour, and the rulers developed government and discourse according to these facts. The Ottoman State, which had ruled over large territories for more than six hundred years, had seen this reality and paid attention to values and life styles of that people and developed a discourse and practice according to aim of ensuring the legitimacy, in order to satisfy expectations of the people. Since Ottoman dynasty and people were Turk and Muslim, rulers and statesmen led to use the sources of Turk and Islam legitimacy. One of the most influential of these sources in terms of life and thought conception of the period had been the religion. So, The Ottoman rulers used religious concepts, ideas, rituals and foundations too much to provide continuity of state, to design society, and settled these elements into policy, bureaucracy and miscellaneous social and economic structures related to the society. In this article which aims to display effects of religious values on state and policy, the values which The Ottoman State used in political, administrative, economic and social areas are explained; examples of religious elements which were developed and matured in society gradually and reflected on relations among state and society are submitted and these examples are examined.
