Abstract

SOLID – VOID THEORY IN ARCHITECTURAL SPACE: ESOGÜ FACULTY OF SCIENCE AND LITERATURE, MESELIK CAMPUS
Universities are educational institutions aiming to give academic education, professional skills and competence to individuals; and to improve the country, region, in economical and cultural perspective in general. Users who benefit from these institutions need closed classrooms, laboratories, practice areas for scientific and academic work and open spaces where they can socialize, relax and perform their physical activities in spare time. Physical structures and qualities of these areas play an important role in the sociological, psychological and academic development of the individual by directly influencing the usage patterns of the users. Universities as dynamic constructs, need spatial designs that can serve for current needs and innovative scientific work. In this study, "Educational and Administrative" building design of the Science and Literature Faculty of Eskişehir Osmangazi University in Meşelik Campus is discussed through its conceptual framework. The mentioned building is designed with the solid – void theory, which is the third dimension of figure – ground organization of the Gestalt principles and it is evaluated as a solid construct in Meşelik Campus. The design area was seen as a solid in the construction borders and was shaped within the voids of ground, underground and upper ground levels in horizontal and vertical planes. These voiding attitudes of the design idea let the designers come up with façade openings and open spaces that formulate the relationship with the entire campus. Administrative, academic and social spaces are all gathered around open spaces in order to support informal education and interaction.
