Abstract

A JOURNEY FROM THE ORPHANAGE TO MOTHERHOOD A QUALITATIVE STUDY ON THE EXPERIENCES OF THE WOMEN RAISED UNDER PROTECTION
When the literature was analyzed, it was seen that several studies had been carried out for approximately 65 years to determine the social and psychological needs of the children under protection. However, these individuals leave these institutions at the age of 18, as required by law. There are just a few studies about the following period after leaving these institutions, as required by law, were not found. Accordingly, this study aims to point out how the women raised in orphanages describe “family” and “motherhood” concepts after leaving the orphanage and starting their own families as well as how the experiences they got in the orphanage affect them in their future lives. It is a qualitative study. The participants of the study were chosen through the purposeful sampling method. They are the women who grew up in orphanages, then got married and now have children At first, the related literature was examined, and expert opinions were gathered to create the semi-structured interview question form. Then, the questions were composed as the first draft of the form, and a pilot interview was done. In the wake of the pilot interview, the question form was rearranged. The data collected were analyzed through the content analysis method. The participant mothers were given code names upon their requests. Also the findings obtained were organized within the three main themes: 1. Orphanage memories, 2. Being a mother, 3. The effect of growing up under institutional care on child raising. As a result, it is seen in the answers of all the participant mothers that their childhood memories include sorrow, pursuit of the compassion, loneliness, grief, violence and abuse. Another remarkable point is that the participant mothers do not have any good memories concerning the period of stay in the orphanage except for the determination of their teachers about education and the affection they showed like a parent. In the study, additionally, various suggestions were made to the Social Service and Child Protection Institution such as developing new patterns according to the internationally determined child protection policies, examining the current case all the time and taking precautions necessary on time.
