Abstract

TURKISH IDENTITY IN EUROPEAN IMAGINATION IN THE CONTEXT OF EVERYDAY PRODUCTION OF IDENTITY POLITICS
From the perspectives of modernist, nationalism is not simply the ideology constructed by the macro-structural forces from above, it is the product of routine activities, hopes, desires, assumptions, needs and interests of ordinary people. With this perspective, this study argues that identity politics which constitute we against them distinction in international relations are constructed through everyday activities and discourses. With a departure from this argument, it investigates the place of Turkishness and Turkish identity in European imagination in the times of the Ottomans. As a result of this investigation, by revealing contradictory and prejudiced expressions in the collective memory of Europe it decontructs identity politics which are constructed through taken for granted approaches to Turkish nation. While images were expressed in romantic terms in the period when Turks were no longer a threat to Europe, negative images and prejudices about Turks in European collective memory were preserved. For this reason, the Turkish image in European art, literature and history has emerged with contradictory representations. Depending on the changing relations of power in different periods, these negative images and discriminative identity policies are reflected in European politics and trigger xenophobia against the Turks. In this study, the importance of questioning the holistic approaches and prejudices of different nations in the international relations by revealing the contradictory Turkish images in European memory has been put forward.
