Abstract


OLD-FASHIONED USAGE LABEL IN TDK TURKISH DICTIONARY
The usage label in the user-oriented dictionaries prepared for the primary purpose of lexicography is the part of the microstructure that provides information to dictionary users and provides users to make maximum use of the dictionary. Dictionary makers prefer various usage labels for deviation lexical items in their dictionaries according to the determined criteria and their target audience. In this context, the most important function of the labels is to guide users about the specific uses and terms in the current language. Also one of the functional parts of dictionaries is a temporal label. Temporal labels are part of the microstructure that marks both old and new words. In some foreign dictionaries, temporal labels are old-fashioned, archaic, historical while in TDK Turkish Dictionary, only the old-fashioned label is used as a temporal label. In this paper old-fashioned label which indicating forgotten referents of words or no longer represents by another word, is examined with frequency-focused and determined that the old-fashioned label is used independently of the frequency of words in TDK Turkish Dictionary. Based on the data obtained, it is concluded that the headwords with the old-fashioned label should be questioned their frequency corpus-oriented. In the study, it is also mentioned that the temporal labels should be varied, a diachrony limit should be determined and the defined principles about usage labels should be accessible in the user’s guide of TDK Turkish Dictionary.
