THE EFFECT OF THE NOMOPHOBIA ON ACADEMIC SUCCESS: AN EVALUATION ON THE POLITICAL SCIENCE AND PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION STUDENTS OF SULEYMAN DEMİREL UNIVERSITY
First computers then tablets and smart phones have become an important part of individuals’ daily lives with the rapid advancements of technology and internet. It has also brought various negative consequences especially with the use of internet becoming cheaper and common through these devices. One of the negative consequences is the fear of being out of mobile phone contact. According to the literature review, it is seen that those who experience nomophobia the most are young people. The aim of this study is to reveal the nomophobia level of university students and to measure whether there is a relationship between nomophobia and the level of success. A survey was conducted on the political science and public administration bachelor students of Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences in Suleyman Demirel University within the scope of the study. As the result of the survey, it was found that 23.7% of the students mildly, 59.9% moderately, and 16.8% extremely experience nomophobia. Moreover, the level of nomophobia was found to be higher in female students compared to the level of male students. As the result of the analysis, it was found that there was no relationship between the level of the nomophobia and the level of success. However, it was noted that there was a very weak negative relationship at the level of (r=0,112) between the duration of internet use of students and their success levels. In other words, it was found that when the time spent on internet increased, the success levels of students decreased.
