Abstract


DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH EXPENDITURES IN THE OECD COUNTRIES: PANEL DATA ANALYSIS
Health expenditures, which is one of the main indicators of development, is extremely important for the country's economies. Regardless of the level of development of countries, various health problems are encountered and more spending on health expenditures is made. Health expenditures are defined as the sum of both public and private expenditures for all health-related goods and services. The increase in health expenditures positively affects the life expectancy and quality of individuals. Fundamentally, economic, technological, social and cultural factors can be said to increase health expenditures. The increase in health expenditures also increases the life expectancy and expectations of individuals and thus contributes to the realization of economic growth. Health expenditures have a direct impact on the income and welfare of countries, labor productivity and human capital factors. In this study, the determinants of health expenditures in 18 OECD countries are investigated by using panel data method in the period of 2000-2015.It was used health expenditure per capita as a dependent; real income per person, life expectancy at birth, 65 and over population, crude birth rate and population growth as independent variables.The results show that the per capita health expenditures are determined by real income per person, life expectancy at birth, 65 and over population and crude birth rate.
