Abstract

INVESTIGATION OF PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS' WORD LEARNING MOTIVATION AND READING COMPREHENSION LEVELS
This research carried out with the aim of realizing whether a relation between the primary school fourth graders’ vocabulary learning motivation and reading comprehension levels exist or not, has been designed according to relational survey model. The research population consists of 2594 fourth graders at 35 primary schools located in the central district of Kırıkkale province; and its sample consists of 350 students chosen with the method of simple random sampling. In order to determine the vocabulary learning motivation of the students participating in the research, Vocabulary Learning Motivation Scale and Reading Comprehension Test to detect their reading comprehension levels were used. Data were collected in the months of November and December of the academic year 2018-2019. The objective of the research was explained to the teacher and students, and students answered the data collection instruments in the classroom environment, within the course hours. Student’s gender, class teacher’s gender and classroom size were regarded as variable. In the light of findings obtained from the research, female students’ reading comprehension scores are higher than male students. It has been determined that the students’ scores for vocabulary learning motivation and for reading comprehension vary by teacher’s gender. Vocabulary learning motivation of the students in the classrooms with the size under 15 is medium; and vocabulary learning motivation of the students in the classrooms having a size above 30 is high. Vocabulary learning motivation scores of the students whose class teacher is male are higher than the ones whose teacher is female. There is not any statistically significant relation between the primary school fourth graders’ scores for vocabulary learning motivation and for reading comprehension levels.
