Abstract


COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF 5TH AND 6TH GRADE STUDENTS’ LEARNING STRATEGIES AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES CLASS
The main purpose of this study is to examine 5th and 6th grade students’ learning strategies in İnformation Technologies Class and their frequency of usage in terms of some variables. In addition to this, the relationship of students’ academic achievement with their learning strategies and frequency of usage has been examined. In this descriptive study, scanning model has been used. The study group of this research consists of 393 5th and 6th grade students from all secondary schools of Hüyük district of Konya province in 2017- 2018 Academic Year. The universe of the research is the sample of the study as well. Research data has been gathered by means of Learning Strategies Scale and students’ marks in school report. The obtained data has been analyzed by using SPSS 24.0 (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) programme. While frequency (f), percentage (%), mean (x̄), standart deviation (Ss) have been used among descriptive statistical techniques, independent samples t- Test (t), ANOVA (F), pearson multiplication of moments corrolation coefficient (r). As a result of the study, it has been seen that students have always used learning strategies. Among these strategies, while the most used strategies are motivation and retrieval, the least used is attention strategy. Besides these, between students’ learning strategies preferences and the frequency of usage; 1) with regard to gender, a meaningful difference on behalf of female students was found. 2) With regard to grade level, a meaningful difference wasn’t found. 3) With regard to educational status of mother, a meaningful difference was found but with regard to educational status of father, a meaningful diffenece wasn’t found. 4) With regard to schools they study, a meaningful difference was found. Furthermore a positive relationship was seen between learning strategies preferences of students and the frequency of usage, and their academic achievement.
