Abstract

ON THE LEFT-INNER LİNE OF THE BROAD FACE OF THE SECON ALTIN KÖL (E-29) INSCRİPTİON
This article focuses on the glyph inventory of the left-inner line of the broad face of Altın Köl II inscription, as well as the identification of the transitive verb, which is thought to be missing in this line and provides a new reading proposal. Altın Köl II inscription, which is one of the medium-length texts of the Yenisey inscriptions, has been investigated by many scholars so far. The studies of the Finnish research group (1889), Radloff (1895 and 1896), Orkun (1940), Malov (1952), Kljaštornyj (1976), Vasil'ev (1983), Mori (1987), Bazin (1991), Kormušin (1997), Tekin (1998), Aydın (2015) are of particular importance among them. Moreover, www.bitig.org and uqusturk.wordpress.com websites published some photographs of the inscription. When the studies on Altın Köl II inscription are examined it can be seen that the left-inner line of the broad face of the inscription begins with the sign group from the first records. This line continues as in almost all studies and mostly ends with the sign group . In these studies the sign group is read as bodunug ärk bodunug and the following one, which is more problematic, is read as är atım ärän ulug, är atım ärän ulug a or atım ärän ulug a depending on the minor diversities in the sign decipherments. Since the line in question continues with the noun phrase är atım after the second bodunug with the accusative case, the transitive verb, which is expected to be inscribed in the line is thought to be missing. However, when the photographs of Altın Köl II which are published in the www.bitig.org and uqusturk.wordpress.com websites are carefully examined, it can be seen that the glyph inventory of the left-inner line of the broad face of Altın Köl II inscription is different from that given by the previous researchers and the transitive verb which is thought to be missing actually exists there. In this study, the glyph inventory of the left-inner line of the broad face of Altın Köl II is identified as . The line in question is read and interpreted as ärdäm b[ols]ar bodunug ärk bodunug attımı[z] ulu[g] ärdäm[l]ig batur män “Because we are heroes, we threw the people, the strong people (from the realm). I am a great, virtuous hero”. It is shown here that when the sign group in the line is read as attımı[z] “threw (from the realm)”, the transitive verb, which is considered to be missing, appears.
